For this project, I will probably go outside topics in Ethics
in Higher Education. I still do not know what topic I want to write about
specifically, but my choices so far are either the history of architecture or
the effects of alternative sources of energy. The reason I chose these topics
is because I have passion for architecture and I enjoy all aspects of it and
for the impacts of alternative energy is because I have done quite some
research on it and written papers and I think it would be easy for me to
develop a research paper about it. At the moment I am leaning more towards
alternative energy simply because I have vast knowledge about it and it’s still
a debatable topic of our time. The question I mainly have is “Does alternative
energy bring more positive than negative changes to our lives?”. The overall
aim is to show whether or not the alternative energies that currently exists
are a viable change for the current form of energies that we use. Potential
stakeholders for this issues can be the people who work at electricity
companies and generally every person who has to pay for such services. It seems
logical that mostly owners and maybe those who work power plants will be
resistant stakeholders because they can either lose their job or lose a
considerable amount of money because it will not be as profitable.. The average
person would probably be more inclined towards alternative energies as it would
lower costs in general. I would rather persuade the resistant stakeholder to
use these alternative energies since they are who have most to lose and it can
be a hard transition. My main objective of this research paper is not necessarily
to persuade stakeholders to change their opinion, but rather do a well-documented
paper and let the reader decide by him or herself if changing to alternative
energies is the best decision, or maybe even encourage other to try to find
different types to create energy and use it in our everyday lives. I have quite
a few concerns for P3 to be honest. Length being the biggest one. Generally,
when I write papers I tend to be very concise, especially since English is my second
language, and trying to achieve my purpose and having such an amount of length
does make slightly worried. Sometimes it can be an obstacle to get to a
required amount of words but I think that starting early and going to the
writing center for some assistance can help me out to overcome this. Another
concern that I have is the amount of time that we have. There’s still like 5
weeks or so left which doesn’t sound bad, but when you have daily homework and
tests every week, almost everything new becomes a bit overwhelming, or so it
seems at least for me. Other than these factors, I am not worried about
anything else since there is a large amount of information in books, articles
and the internet to complete this project.

Blog post P3
I
spent some time brainstorming what I would be choosing for my P3 topic on the
day of class that was canceled. It took me a little while to pin point which
one I wanted to decide on, but I realized that I had already done so much
research and work into a topic inside of the Ethics in Higher Education. Rising
college tuition costs is a seriously suppressed problem that needs to be tended
to in today’s world. Staying inside the Ethics in Higher Education will help me
by making my sources me easily attainable. Students are always so worried about
the costs of college and suppressing those worries, I believe, would make
students not only do better in their classes but increase their overall
standing as a person after graduation.
My
research question is to the address the issue, why have college tuition prices
risen so drastically over the past 20 years? Arriving at this specific issue is
due to myself being a college student, I want to know the real reasons behind
what has been causing college tuition prices to be rising so rapidly. The
overall theme of my paper will be to inform and the topic is the reasons why
tuition costs are still rising.
Some
potential stakeholders that the informative paper would be directed to would be
undergrad students that are currently experiencing today’s extreme tuition
costs. I know that undergrad students are the stakeholders that appeal to this
topic most because they are all the largest group of people willing to consider
informative information regarding current tuition cost issues. I am taking the
direction of persuading an unconvinced stakeholder. I know that the best way to
get more people on board with solving an issue, is to convince more people of
how severe the issue is in their country and what is causing it.
My
concerns for P3 include that I am not entirely secure on my research question.
I feel like I still have a good idea but I need other ideas and seeing how
everyone else is starting their research process’. Once I have a clear sight on
how my final product is supposed to look I will be able to direct my research
the correct way and execute an effective and informative paper.
Blog Post P3
When it came to picking topics for P3, the possibilities are endless.
With topics in Ethics in Higher Education as well as interests allowed by Ms.
Brookeshier I began to think about topics happening around the US especially
with the election coming up as well problems being addressed in colleges around
the US. I will be going outside the
topic of Ethics in Higher Education for P3.
The first ideas that came to mind when trying to find a topic for P3
were immigration policies, climate change, and the thoughts on if joining a
fraternity or sorority is beneficial or a draw back to college students. After
a few days of thinking about which topic to choose from, I chose the topic on
joining fraternities and sororities. I chose this topic because it shows both
the beneficial aspects and disadvantages of being a part of Greek life for
college students. The research question
I will be asking in P3 is “Is joining fraternities or sororities beneficial or
a draw back to college students?”. The strategies I used to come to the issue
of joining a frat. or sorority was to first look at interest of my own. If
figured the more interested I am in a topic, then the more I would know what to
look for on the topic and the better the paper has potential to be. The other strategies I used was to find a
topic currently happening around me and with all of the fraternities and
sororities being big news around campus, it seemed to work perfectly. The
overall theme of my P3 research paper will be to determine whether joining a
fraternity or sorority is more of a beneficial or a draw back to college
students after joining. Since I am
planning on rushing next fall semester I would like to know what I am getting
myself into. I began to think about how many times I had heard about how going
into a fraternity would be a great idea as well as hearing how joining a
fraternity would hurt my college career.
The potential stakeholders in this argument are the students considering
joining Greek life (Pledges), the Universities that have Greek life, and the
formed fraternities and sororities themselves. The pledges stakeholder appeals
to me the most since I plan on being a potential pledge for a fraternity here at
Colorado State University. In my part, I would personally persuade an
unconvinced stakeholder. With the research paper, the more evidence you have
for your argument, the more convincing your argument and cause will seem. Trying to persuade someone who is an
unconvinced stakeholder in this situation would be trying to convince someone
who could be a potential pledge or someone who believes that Greek life is
unnecessary to college students’ lives. Targeting
this group will not be easy by any means but it is the biggest target group. Thousands
of people are already in the Greek life but a lot more aren’t. Many people
think about joining but aren’t sure what to expect and end up backing out of
it. That is also my personal reason for choosing this topic, I wish to know
what I am getting into and what I can get out of it.
As
of now I am slightly concerned on P3 and how to complete the project entirely.
My biggest concerns are the immense pieces of work needed to be finished as
well as how to complete these pieces of work correctly and o their full
potential. The researching will not be a
problem but I believe when I say that many of us have never seen a true
annotated bibliography that I speak for the majority of the class. Also clarification on how the research paper
should be organized could be more talked about if possible. Others than that, the P3 project seems fairly
well laid out. Seeing that it is the
biggest project we have for this semester it comes with knowing that it will be
no joking matter when it comes to time consumption and work in and out of the
classroom as well as probable office hours. If we could go through any of the following in
class then it would be much a
P3
Going into P3, I originally wanted to talk about a topic
regarding politics. This was an interest of mine because of the current
presidential debate but also just a general interest involving the subject. I
decided not to further my research in this topic because I believe it is a very
difficult subject to discuss and research while having absolutely no bias. This
pertains to both my own writing as well as finding scholarly articles that do
not lean to one side. I also was having a difficult time coming up with what my
research question would be, since I have never written a paper on politics. I
changed my topic of study to Greek life, specifically fraternity’s. I am
interested in this topic because I do not know a lot about it and I believe
that will help my writing as far as being as unbiased as possible. The topic of
Greek life is within our course work of Ethics in Higher Education but the texts
in EHE are more along the lines of sorority life, which honestly does not
interest me as much. Fraternities have more of an edge because of all of the
hazing rumors typical fraternities supposedly engage in. My research question
is “What are the positive/negative effects to joining a fraternity with in the
Greek Life culture?” I want to split my essay into talking about both the
negative and positive things regarding the subject. I believe that discussing
both the positive and negative sides of fraternity’s will help my essay be
unbiased. As for stakeholders, I think that potential Greek life recruits would
find more of an interest towards this topic because it would be a good chance
for them to have some research on what things they can get out of being in a
frat but also some of the things they could experience, both good and bad. The
argument in this research is partially by my own self, because I am including
both negative and positive things on the subject. Another stakeholder could be presidents
of campus’s because they have a large say on whether or not Greek Life should
be on their campus at all. It can also be a good opportunity for overbearing
parents to read this research paper, to see if they really want to pay for
their child to be involved with an association like this one. I think having
potential fraternity members be my stakeholder will be the best crowd because
these individuals encourage myself to have the least bias opinion. Potential fraternity members are also
important to remember because they are not necessarily associated yet, so they
still have an open mind on whether or not this is something they will get
involved with or not. This makes them an “unconvinced” stakeholder. My only
concerns at this point is finding reliable and relatable sources for my topic.
I believe that a personal interview will be a beneficial source for this
process. I have written research papers before so I am fairly comfortable with
looking for scholarly articles. I enjoy that P3 is centered around what we want to write about!
P3 Psychology Topic
Choosing my topic for my paper was a relatively easy task for me. I chose to stray away from the "Ethics of Higher Education" themes because I feel that they are restrictive in the way that they only present mainstream and overly glorified agendas. Just my opinion. This left me to brainstorm on my own time, and during a conversation with a friend, I decided I would write about a psychology based topic. Specifically about sociopaths, and their prevalence in the corporate and political world.
Why research question will be a variation of "Why is there such a high ratio of individuals, that can be considered high-functioning sociopaths, in the corporate and political world, while the opposite can be said about the those incarcerated in the prison system?" I arrived at this research subject because of a study I recalled a study in which psychologists were stumped on why they found so few criminal sociopaths, while accidentally arriving at evidence of a predominantly bigger group of sociopaths living within the corporate world like that of Wall Street.
A number of stakeholders in my topic would be psychologists, a control group of normal functioning corporate CEOs or politicians, a test group of CEOs and politicians that show signs of sociopathy, and a group of random prisoners. The stakeholders with the biggest stake would be the psychologists, and in order to find any ideas to implement, a basic degree of psychology must first be understood.
I am confident moving forward with P3 because this topic is very interesting to me and I doubt I'll have a difficult time finding sources and information. Not to mention, I have a decent exposure to people with sociopathic traits, and understanding them to find out why or how they take up so many different positions of power will be a captivating topic.

P3 Blog post
At the beginning of this assignment, I had absolutely no idea what to write about. For the discussion I thought of questions such as “Why are Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump the Presidential nominees” or “How is the cost of college tuition decided”. I didn’t like either of those topics so I thought a little bit more- I want to research something that I’m genuinely interested in and that’s when I got it. I decided to question “Does online education help better students than compared to traditional education?”. This is one of the themes in the Ethics and Higher Education book and it’s something I relate to because I am in both online and traditional courses and I am interested to see what they say about both from different standpoints. I think the potential stakeholders I could direct my argument towards would be students because they will be the ones most likely to either take traditional or online schooling, and parents because I feel like they have the right to know which type of teaching helps better their child. When it comes down to it, I would like my main stakeholder to be students because they are the ones that ultimately get the greater impact and should know the pros and cons to both online classrooms and traditional classrooms as well. I would rather persuade an unconvinced stakeholder that traditional schooling and classrooms helps better students than compared to online schooling. I think that there’s mixed emotions about both online education as well as traditional education- there’s pros and cons to both but I am hoping by the end of this persuasive argument that more people can see that ultimately traditional education is the better route to go if possible. One of the main concerns I have is that there won’t be enough facts to back up my claim that traditional schooling is better than online. This is a concern of mine because in a way, it can be seen as an opinion based paper and that is not what I want this paper to turn into at all. In order for this paper to be successful, I am going to need a lot of research and facts to help me back up this claim. My goal is not only show the difference in grades but as well as the positive long term effects that traditional teaching has on students. One of the things we do in class that has helped my writing progress has been how we let other people read our papers and give their critiques and input. This has helped me in terms of improving my writing because I may think something makes sense but when someone else reads it they may have no idea what I’m talking about so i’ve learned to slow down and make sure people understand the point I am trying to make. As a student who is in both regular and online classes, I am excited to see the pros and cons of both as well as the long term effects each one has. I believe on an emotional level, that I’ll be able to connect with the reader about why traditional schooling is more beneficial now all I need are the facts to back it up.
P3 Research
For the in class activities, I brainstormed the topics of drug use of college students and how it affects them, if students with test anxiety experience more anxiety closer to the date of the test, and if light color affects mood. I am interested in art and the influence it has on people, music and its influence in society, and the human mind and psychology. I am going to go outside the topic of Ethics in Higher Education as my topic does not concern that. My research question is are zoos ethical. While it is a jump to this topic from my original ideas and likes, I arrived at this topic by talking with others in my hall. We were recently discussing zoos and how the majority of us find them cruel to hold animals in captivity. I became interested to see if there was further evidence on if zoos are ethical and decided this would be a good topic to write about for P3. Also, I feel like this is a currently relevant and talked about subject because of the talk about Sea World and Harambe. My overall theme is how ethical it is to hold animals in captivity and my topic for the issue is going to be the ethics behind zoos. Potential stakeholders include the animals held in captivity, zoo owners and operators, and those who help zoos run, like feed and animal capturing companies. I am most appealed to directing the paper towards the zoo owners because they are the ones that hold the most stake in the issue. They are also the ones that have the most power in the continuation, change in, or dismantling of zoos. I would like to convince a resistant stakeholder, because their mind is already thinking about both sides and may need just a little push or extra information to make a decision.
My concerns moving into P3 include not being able to find enough scholarly information about the issue and not having enough to write about because of the lack of information available. I am also concerned I will find too much information on one side of the issue and not enough information supporting the other viewpoints, as this will lead to a one sided paper. To address these concerns I will use what I learned during the library day to better search for information and scholarly sources. Through searching for information from different sources and on different platforms I will be able to find a vast amount of information. Hopefully by finding many sources of information I will be able to find support for all sides and views of the issue allowing me to write a well rounded paper that addresses all sides of the issue. I think having peer review days that focus on if the paper is addressing enough on all sides of the argument and how convincing it is. I think it will help to have other read the paper especially because it is so long.
P3 Research: Concussions vs Depression
For P3 most of the topic ideas that
I brainstormed dealt with factors that take a toll on human’s ability to be
happy and successful. These ideas included, how sleep affects student’s grades,
how bullying affects the victim’s life, how concussions relate to the risk of
depression, and lastly, whether or not flu shots influence good health. These
topics interest me because I have a passion in understanding what it is that
can make or break a person’s dreams. I also love looking at topics through a
psychologist’s eye because the brain fascinates me. Due to the fact that these
topics are not able to be found in the “Ethics in Higher Education” book I will
be looking at scholarly articles to research my topic instead.
Originally I had no idea what it
was that I wanted to research, so I began by thinking about topics that have
come up in my current classes, mainly my CO 150, ANTH 100, and PSY 100 classes.
Trying to stay in the Ethics in Higher Education course topics, my first thoughts
included the factors that affect student’s success. Deriving from that my topic
broadened, and I determined that I wanted to research factors that affect people’s
overall success in life. This realization brought me to becoming more interested
in the psychologist field of the brain. After finalizing my thoughts, I
determined that I am most interested in researching and learning about the
relation between concussions and the impact they have on the emotional stability
of a person. My inquiry question is, “How do concussions affect the amygdala
and how does it cause a greater risk for depression.”
http://www.advancedvisiontherapycenter.com/Documents%20and%20Settings/58/Site%20Documents/Site%20Pictures/Concussion%20Symptoms.jpg
On top of my interest for glitches
in our brain that cause emotional stability, I also wanted to choose this as my
research topic because it was the easiest topic for me to come up with
stakeholders. Some stakeholders that are likely to be concerned with
concussions effect on the amygdala include, cognitive or counseling
psychologists, athletic directors, sports coaches, athletes, and parents of
athletes. An example of a possible cognitive psychologist or counseling
psychologist is Katharyn Rickards, an Associate professor and Director of the
Integrated Health Psychology Clinic at Colorado State University. Along with
that an example of an athletic director that may be interested in this topic
could be Colorado State University’s athletic director, Joe Parker. Mike Bobo,
the head coach of the Colorado State University football team could also be a
potential stakeholder. Along with that since football players are at high risks
for concussions, one of Colorado State University’s own could be interested, such
as senior, Deonte Clyburn or his parents or any parent involved in the well-being
of their athlete. Although most may want to know how concussions truly affect
our brains, some of the stakeholders may be opposed to knowing the full details,
while other will be extremely concerned. Some of the stakeholders mentioned
earlier that may want to hear this research would include, any psychologist
looking at the mental health of their patients, or an athlete, or parent of an
athlete that is more concerned with their health than their ability to continue
playing the sport. On the other hand, some stakeholders that may not want to know
the full effect that concussions have on the brain include, coaches and
athletic directors that are scared of losing their athletes.
All in all, I am excited to
research this topic but I do have concerns that I will not be able to find
enough factual information, or that I am not going to be able to properly write
the bibliography. In order to eliminate the potential of these concerns occurring
I am going to make sure that I start my research early, and that I ask
questions when I am confused about something. It would also be helpful if we
could have class time to peer review the bibliographies.
